![]() The Eagles' defense stood tall in the game, allowing a match-low 10 kills. USI's offense played flawlessly in the second set, earning 16 kills with no errors and a stellar 0.533 hitting percentage. USI was able to hold off UT Martin's late rally thanks to back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Leah Coleman that started a set-sealing 6-1 run for the Eagles. The Skyhawks would not go down easily as they cut the deficit to 19-16 after posting six kills in their own run. The Eagles would go on to score seven of the next 10 points to extend their lead to five. USI was able to get a quick lead after kills from Bednar and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Keira Moore and continued to add on with three kills from sophomore middle hitter Bianca Anderson to go up 10-8. The Eagles commanded the entire second frame, posting a 25-17 victory. In the set, USI secured a match-high 18 kills with a 0.279 hitting percentage. Repeating back to the patient helps you focus on what they're saying, not interrupt and be listening to understand instead of listening to respond. It can be as simple as, "So what I hear you saying is that." or "So it sounds like you." One of the primary components of the active listening technique is the echo, which means that you repeat back to the patient what you heard them say. Practice active listening by repeating what you heard back to the patient It's also easy for patients to get embarrassed in settings where they have to tell intimate details of their health to complete strangers, which could make it more difficult for them to open up. In the health care setting, this could be an issue with the patient being too overwhelmed with pain to be able to communicate clearly or fearing being labeled a "problem" by the staff and not receiving quality care. Slatkin specializes in communication and says, "people hesitate to open up due to either not knowing how to articulate what they are feeling or because they fear the response." and LCPC, is a counselor with The Marriage Restoration Project. Learning how to practice active listening can help you navigate these types of scenarios and increase the lines of communication with all of your patients. Hearing your patients' life stories and getting to play a role in helping them get through one of the more difficult times of their lives can be very satisfying, but when a patient has trouble communicating or comes across as verbally hostile, it can be frustrating at best. Reflect what he has said to you, and expand on it to give him more words and to learn ways to describe his feelings. The Importance of Actively Listening to Patientsīeing a nurse is all about interacting with patients, and this can be a positive and a negative. Children usually correct their parents if their feelings are described incorrectly. Sometimes when parents are learning active listening skills, they worry that they will incorrectly summarize and label their child’s feelings. You can just sit with your child while she is upset or stay physically close and hold or comfort her. You can let your child know you are paying attention to how she feels by what you do even if you don’t say anything. Your child may not know himself what he is feeling and by talking you can figure it out together. Let him know that you are paying attention by saying, “It seems like you are upset or “It sounds/looks like something is bothering you”. For example, your child may be crying but you may not know if he is angry, scared, or sad. There may be times when you are unsure what your child is feeling. Reflection of emotions is not always easy. This gives your child a word for the emotion and helps him learn that it is ok to talk about feelings. When you reflect your child’s emotions, you watch your child’s behavior and describe the emotions he seems to be having. ![]() ![]() ![]() There never was any reason to import Norway Maples except for people in the nursery business to have the next big thing to sell. If you live within a quarter mile or so of a woodland, your Norway Maple will eventually destroy the woodland.Īesthetics - I hate to see Norway Maples because there are so many native trees that would grow in exactly the same places, would look better, and would demonstrate an appreciation of our native fauna. However, once Norway Maples start taking over a woodland most of the shrub and forb (wildflower) layer dies out, leaving a woodland of Norway Maples, a few older tees that were there before the Norway Maples took over, and only a few species of shrubs and wildflowers, most of which aren't native. In fact, I think it may be the worst invasive plant in PA because it invades mature, undisturbed woodlands (most invasive plants tend to take over disturbed areas), and because it looks enough like a native tree that most people dont notice it taking over. It creates dense shade, has shallow roots, and is (so I have read) alleopathic - it creates chemicals that inhibit the growth of other plants. You cannot grow anything beneath a Norway Maple. I would definitely get rid of the Norway Maple. What do you think - would it be a good or bad thing to get rid of the Norway Maple? Thanks My problem is that friends and relatives are expressing a lot of shock and disapproval and it's making me question whether it's the 'right thing to do.' Isn't it actually a good idea to remove non-native invasives? I admit it doesn't seem particularly invasive, but what if birds are spreading the seeds? I have a small, urban backyard, and I'd really like to make it as ecologically friendly (and attractive to birds!) as possible. I've even got a baby Serviceberry (A.laevis) to plant instead, although in a more suitable spot (the current tree is too close to the house and cuts off my view of the children playing. Last summer, I'd almost decided on turning it into a snag, and growing some sort of native vine on it, but now I really think I just want it gone. However, I'm pretty sure the tree in question is a Norway Maple, which is non-native and considered invasive in my state. I want some sunlight and air circulation! For a time, I considered removal out of the question - it just seemed very wrong to even think about removing a tree. I hate to call a tree ugly, but it really is, and the dense shade is unwelcome since my next door neighbor's huge Holly and numerous Pines and Yews already shade our yard quite a bit. The 1991 series was successful enough to begin production of a 1992 series, but the set was cancelled prior to mass production. Newly designed series were produced in 19. Series 1 re-used designs that were issued on the 1967 die-cut series and Series 2 re-used designs from the 1969 Wacky Ads, with 8 extra designs that were brand new. Sixteen different series were produced from 1973 to 1977 and were sold in five-cent to ten-cent packs containing two stickers (three stickers in the sixteenth), a stick of bubble gum, and a puzzle piece/checklist. Wacky Packages returned in 1973 as stickers for a highly successful run. There were two different versions of the "Ads": the long perforations (believed to signify the first printing) and short perforations (believed to signify the second printing), as well as an early 5-cent wrapper for the first printing and a later 10-cent wrapper for the second printing. Card #25 "Good & Empty" was removed from the initial release, after Leaf Brands sued. These cards, approximately three-by-five inches (76 × 127 mm), were designed more like miniature billboards with a die-cut around the parodied product, so it could pop out of the horizontal billboard scene. This series was followed by a somewhat different Wacky Ads line in 1969, featuring gags and roughs by Lynch and Deitch with finished paintings by Sutton. "Moron Salt" was pulled later, and replaced by "Jolly Mean Giant" which was also pulled soon thereafter and became almost as rare as Ratz and Cracked Animals. Two of the cards – "Cracked Animals" and "Ratz Crackers" – were pulled from production after an initial run and have since become extremely rare. ![]() This series featured parodies created by Spiegelman and primarily painted by Saunders.
